It is with great regret that we have to announce that the section on the PIES website where people could locate information about local services within the North Trent Cancer Network (NTCN) has been taken off the website. This is because the PCTs in NORCOM have withdrawn their funding of Trent Palliative Care Centre (TPCC) with effect from 1 April 2007. It was through TPCC funding that PIES was being run for the past few years. We are pleased that the University of Sheffield will continue to support our research and educational activities, but this does not extend to work that is of a clinical nature. The ending of NORCOM funding towards TPCC has resulted in substantial redundancies of staffing. Unfortunately one of the redundancies has left us unable to maintain the North Trent network information on PIES. Rather than persisting with outdated information, we have sadly made the decision to remove all references to local services from the website. We regret that this action will result in a loss of service to patients and carers within the North Trent Cancer Network. It is ironic that the reason that the PCTs in NORCOM gave for withdrawing their funding was that “The focus now for PCTs is the funding of direct patient care…”. We hope that with the recent appointment of a new post dedicated to patient information and support, the North Trent Cancer Network will be able to fill this gap at an early opportunity. We can confirm that we will find resources to maintain the main part of the PIES website which is linking to nearly 1000 national and international web resources on information and support in cancer care. We therefore hope that the PIES website will remain a highly valued resource in directing people towards high quality and reliable websites in the field of cancer and supportive care.
